Art can take many forms and can have multiple purposes and is produced for countless reasons. I believe art has one underlying universal function. Everything else is the result of fashion, culture, and greed. If we really look at art, transformative, powerful, engaging art, we see. That is what I believe art’s basic function is. It enables a viewer to interact with an idea that was born from the commitment of an artist, a creator, to actively engage in an act of perception expression. Art guides us to see. Viewed in this way, I understand artists to be seers for all who are open to look, to understand their role in the relationship. Art is less about seeing how the artist handles the material, what the material is, or even the artist’s perception. It is about allowing the viewer a chance to see in a way they may not have considered before. Perception is key to everything in life. I believe the purpose of art is to attune the human mind, to stimulate further creativity in a never-ending search for something new. When we see or hear something new, for the first time, our brain creates new pathways and engages old similar ones. This is a creative act of growth at the basic level, a biological level. Then our mind becomes involved and attaches theories and explanations. This too is a creative act. So, you can see, through the act of engaging in a perception expression, the whole creative process the artist goes through, begets evidence of an idea wrestled, danced, and finally settled with. This idea, this painting, novel, musical score, this dance, photograph, film or poem exists so that the viewer may enter into a relationship with the artist and the world and gain a new perspective with new skills of perception.
