The ensō is a circle drawn with a single stroke, sometimes two strokes. It is a zen practice to express the moment when the mind is free and may also symbolize completeness, strength, infinity and acceptance of imperfection. This series begins with a slow single contour line of paint which becomes the inner edge of the space defined. That edge is then expanded outward to the edges of the canvas leaving the raw white primed surface of the canvas to hover within the space. These painting are started and finished in one setting remaining connected to the practice of a single stroke. In this way, the time in the studio when the painting was created becomes the ensō itself.
